When the phone company went to automatic switching instead of an operator patching you through to the end person, absolutely everyone with a phone was able to hack the phone system if they knew how.

In 1963 MIT’s student newspaper called the students who would mess with the phone system ‘hackers’. This was the first time that word was used in that way.
1957 The father of phone hacking was a blind seven year old boy with perfect pitch that noticed funny things happened when he whistled the fourth E above a middle C, which is 2600 Hertz.

He found that a whistle in the captain crunch cerial would make the correct 2600 hertz tone. He ran a radio show and most of the early hackers were blind people calling in.
Blue Box:
One of Wozniak’s first projects was building the blue box, that let hackers make free phone calls. Back then even a call from Ingleside to Aransas pass was long distance, or Corpus to Robstown was also long distance. The Blue Box was ‘invented’ in the 1960’s Woz was selling them around 1972.

Kevin is the person ‘Wargames’ the movie was about. He got his staer hacking the phone system, but moved on into hacking into NORAD.
Mitnick loved the thrill of breaking into systems, but as far as anybody can tell, he neve purposely did any damage, and never profited from his hacking.
